EV CHARGING COST CALCULATOR AUSTRALIA

EV Charging Cost
Calculator Australia

Estimate annual and monthly EV charging costs and cost per 100 km using your own Australian electricity tariff, driving distance and vehicle efficiency. Choose the single-charge tool for cost and time between two battery levels, or compare EV and petrol ownership costs. Replace the starting inputs with your figures; these are estimates, not a predicted bill.

Charging loss is the small difference between electricity drawn from the grid and energy stored in your battery. The default 10% is an editable planning assumption, not a measured or universal loss rate.

Estimate notice: Actual charging costs may vary with your tariff, charging mix, driving conditions, vehicle efficiency and public charging prices. Use this as a planning guide, not financial, tax or retailer advice. Check your current plan and vehicle details.

Methodology: Costs use your entered assumptions. The reference profile identifies its source, date and scope; other defaults remain editable planning assumptions. TCO is a simple nominal-dollar comparison: purchase price − resale value + operating costs + total finance cost. It excludes tax, inflation, incentives and opportunity cost.

HOW THE ESTIMATE WORKS

How EV charging cost is calculated

For one charge, the basic calculation is electricity drawn from the grid × your electricity price. The calculator adjusts battery energy for the charging-loss percentage you choose, then keeps home and public charging prices separate.

For a yearly estimate, enter your annual distance, EV efficiency and charging mix. This avoids assuming that battery size, a national average tariff or one public-charging price represents your situation.

Grid energy = battery energy ÷ (1 − loss ÷ 100). A 10% loss input means 90% of grid electricity reaches the battery in this model. For yearly driving, battery energy = kilometres ÷ 100 × kWh per 100 km. The yearly cost applies your home and public shares and rates separately.

Which estimate do you need?

The EV running-cost tool shows annual, monthly and per-100-km charging costs. Single-charge cost & time uses usable battery capacity and the change in battery percentage; its time estimate assumes the entered power stays constant. EV vs petrol / hybrid compares purchase and running costs, with optional ownership expenses and resale. It does not calculate tax benefits.

EV charging cost questions

How much does an EV cost per 100 km?

Divide annual charging cost by annual kilometres and multiply by 100. This is electricity cost only; purchase price, servicing and other ownership expenses belong in the ownership comparison.

Is home EV charging cheaper than public charging?

Compare your actual home usage rate with the public site price, including any separate session, parking or idle fees. The calculator models the entered energy prices; it does not add those other fees.

Can I charge using off-peak electricity?

If your plan offers an off-peak rate, match charging to the stated hours. Open Fine-tune this estimate in the yearly tool to enter peak and off-peak rates and the share charged off-peak.

How is EV charging cost calculated?

Multiply the electricity drawn from the grid by the price you pay per kilowatt-hour. Allow for charging loss when converting energy stored in the battery to electricity drawn.

Can I use my own Australian electricity rate?

Yes. Enter the usage rate from your bill and, if relevant, use the peak and off-peak fields to match when you normally charge.

Does the calculator include public charging?

Yes. The yearly calculator separates home and public charging, while the single-charge tool estimates one charging session from your battery, target level, price and charger power.

Illustrative charging costs

These are invented scenarios for electricity drawn from the grid, not vehicle specifications or Australian average tariffs. If the kWh figure is energy added to the battery instead, allow for charging loss first. All amounts are AUD and exclude other fees.

Grid electricity × example usage rate
Grid energy$0.20/kWh$0.30/kWh$0.40/kWh
40 kWh$8$12$16
60 kWh$12$18$24
80 kWh$16$24$32

For example, adding 60 kWh to a battery with an illustrative 10% loss requires about 66.7 kWh from the grid. At an example $0.30/kWh, the energy cost is $20.

Home, off-peak and public charging

Home: use the usage rate on your bill. Off-peak: use that rate only for electricity charged within the plan’s stated window. The yearly tool can weight your peak and off-peak charging shares.

Public AC and DC: enter the site’s displayed energy price and check other fees separately. A charger’s rated power is not a guaranteed charging speed. Compare your own home and public prices rather than assuming a fixed saving.
