GARAGE & GRID GUIDE

Can You Charge an EV With an Extension Lead in Australia?

Do not make an ordinary extension lead your normal EV-charging setup. Australian Government guidance recommends connecting the EV charging cable directly to the power point. If the supplied cable does not reach, check the equipment instructions and ask a licensed electrician about a suitable outlet or dedicated charger.

Do not make an extension lead your normal EV-charging setup. Australian Government guidance recommends plugging the EV charging cable directly into the power point rather than using an extension cord or power board.

This does not mean every portable charger is unsafe. Some homes and vehicles can charge from a standard power point, but the outlet, circuit, supplied charging equipment and installation need to be appropriate. If the cable does not reach, get advice on a suitable outlet or dedicated charger instead of improvising a regular cable route.

1. Start with direct connection

If possible, park within reach of the supplied EV charging cable and connect it directly to the power point. Do not add a power board, double adaptor or extension lead just to make the normal setup reach.

Check the vehicle and charging-equipment manuals before charging. Follow their instructions for outlets, current settings and outdoor use, and do not modify cables or connectors.

2. Why a generic extension-lead answer is not enough

Tesla’s Australian Model 3 service manual says never to use an extension cord with its Mobile Connector. That is a manufacturer instruction for Tesla equipment, not a universal specification for every EV — but it illustrates why the product manual matters.

The ACT Emergency Services Agency says that, when charging from a general power outlet, only extension leads and power sockets intended for EV charging should be used. That conditional statement does not override national direct-connection guidance or a vehicle maker’s instructions. It is not a basis for publishing a list of ‘safe’ leads.

3. Make the parking-and-power plan work

Ask a licensed electrician to assess the outlet, circuit, switchboard capacity and cable route if direct connection is not possible. They can explain whether a correctly located outlet or dedicated EV charger is the sensible option for your home.

If you need charging before that work is arranged, use a suitable public charger or delay the home charge rather than rely on an improvised recurring cable route across a driveway, footpath or garage opening.

4. Use a charging estimate after the safety check

Once you know the safe charging arrangement, use your own electricity rate, vehicle battery level and charger power to estimate charging time and cost. Do not treat an estimate as approval for an electrical installation.

For renters and apartment residents, also confirm who controls the parking space and what approval is needed before relying on home charging or arranging electrical work.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to charge an EV with an extension lead?

Do not assume an ordinary household extension lead is suitable. Start with national direct-connection guidance and the instructions for the vehicle and charging equipment.

Can an EV charge from a standard Australian power point?

Some EVs can charge from a suitable standard power point with appropriate portable charging equipment. The outlet, circuit, equipment and installation still need to be appropriate.

What should I do if the EV charging cable does not reach?

Ask a licensed electrician to assess the outlet, circuit and parking layout. A correctly located outlet, dedicated charger or suitable public charger is safer than improvising a recurring cable route.
