GARAGE & GRID GUIDE

Your first public EV charge: an Australian checklist

Five things to check before you plug in, pay or leave your car at a public charger.

Your first public charge should be routine, not stressful. Before you arrive, check the location, charging speed, vehicle compatibility and payment method in the operator information.

At slower AC sites you may need to bring your own cable. At fast chargers, the cable is often attached — but always check the site details.

1. Before you drive there

Check the charger is available, compatible and fast enough for the time you have. Keep a second nearby option in mind for busy periods.

Look for the energy rate, accepted payment method and any idle fee. Public charging generally costs more than home charging, so do not use your home rate as a substitute.

2. At the charger

Follow the on-screen instructions, connect the cable and confirm your vehicle has started charging before you walk away. An app can help you monitor progress where the operator supports it.

Set a realistic target. Charging can slow substantially above 80%, so only continue if you need the extra range.

3. When you are finished

End the session, return the cable as instructed and move the car promptly. Read the signage because idle fees may apply after charging stops.

Use the Charging Cost calculator with the displayed rate and charger power to make the next session less uncertain.
