Australia EV sales: what the first seven months of 2026 show
A short, dated market snapshot — useful context for buyers, not a recommendation of what to purchase.
- 127,244battery-electric vehicles reported January–July 2026.
- 17.3%battery-electric share of the combined new-vehicle market, year to date.
- 21.7%battery-electric share in July alone.
Australia's EV market grew quickly through July 2026. That makes EVs easier to see on the road, but sales volume is not a verdict on whether a particular model suits your parking, charging access, budget or driving needs.
This snapshot is dated 31 July 2026. It combines reporting from the FCAI and Electric Vehicle Council, which means some model-level data may arrive later or remain incomplete. We therefore show verified market totals, not a precise model-by-model July ranking.
1. What changed by July
Battery-electric vehicles totalled 23,510 in July 2026, representing 21.7% of the combined new-vehicle market. Year to date, the reported total was 127,244 battery-electric vehicles and 17.3% market share.
The month and year-to-date figures are useful for understanding market momentum. They are not a forecast for resale value, electricity costs or charging availability.
2. Keep H1 and July figures separate
For the first half of 2026, published reporting recorded 103,843 battery-electric deliveries. Tesla Model Y led H1 with 20,396 deliveries, followed by BYD Sealion 7 with 12,516; BYD led EV brands with 29,192 deliveries and Tesla recorded 23,588.
Those H1 figures should not be mixed with July year-to-date figures. Some brands and models report through different channels, and a model name can include both electric and non-electric variants.
3. Use sales data for the right decision
Use sales data to understand what Australians are buying, not to choose a vehicle automatically. Start with the practical questions: can you charge where you park, what electricity rate applies, how far do you drive, and what does the ownership cost look like for your own assumptions?
Then use the running-cost calculator with your own efficiency and charging mix. Popularity does not guarantee lower running cost or a better fit for your household.
