GARAGE & GRID GUIDE
EV charging loss explained: why the charger and battery numbers differ
Understand the difference between electricity supplied by the grid and energy stored in your EV battery.
Charging equipment and the battery do not transfer every kilowatt-hour from the grid into the battery. The calculator therefore divides battery energy by one minus the chosen loss percentage.
A 10% loss assumption means a battery needs 1 kWh of stored energy for every roughly 1.11 kWh taken from the grid. This is a planning input, not a universal technical claim.
Temperature, charging equipment and charging speed can affect actual results. Use your own charging records where possible.
